Book Review: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

April 20, 2010

Last week, my wife and I had the rare opportunity to go to the movies. In the lost haze of time, before breeding, we used to go to the movies all the time. Nowadays it is a real undertaking, involving babysitting, meal prep, timing, and luck. Takes luck for there to be a decent movie to see.

Hot-Tub Time Machine was last weeks’ choice, and we regretted it. It is not The Hangover. And John Cusack is drifting into tiresome poserhood. Really mediocre.

There was one other movie we thought about, but we couldn’t make the timing work. A foreign film, which got incredible reviews: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Why Can’t I Read Dune?

April 1, 2010

io9 Recently had a thread about sci-fi blind spots, supposed sci-fi masterworks that you have just missed. That got me thinking, and the ensuing discussion was interesting, but it left me with a question?

Why can’t I read the Dune series?

A Christmas Kindle

January 11, 2010

My lovely bride, perhaps out of fear that my book collection will push us out of our home, bought me a Kindle for Christmas.

In a fit of self-defense, I had added the Kindle to my Amazon Wish List sometime in November. I say self-defense because our local Barnes & Nobles was rather prominently pushing the Nook, and based on reviews I knew I’d rather have the Kindle.

Books Read in 2009 – Triumphs

December 22, 2009

Previously, I discussed multiple series books I read this year, the singletons that passable to awful, or were plain good. Here I’ll go through the books I loved this year, the ones that made me happy I read as much as I do.

These are books I really, really liked and recommend unreservedly. No particular order.

Books Read in 2009 – Good but not Great

December 21, 2009

These are books I considered well worth the price. Books I liked. Most have a flaw of some sort, but it doesn’t prevent them from succeeding.

Books Read in 2009 – Lousy to Acceptable

December 19, 2009

OK, these are relative one-offs that were either awful, or “just ok”. “Just ok” means they weren’t worth hardcover prices, but I can respect the effort.

Disasters are books for whom I want my time and money back 🙂

Books Read in 2009 – Multi-Book Series

December 19, 2009

This year I read a bunch of  books in series. Here I’m going to go through the ones where I read multiple books in a series. In no particular order.

When a Book Makes You Jump for Joy!

October 11, 2009

When Sharon Lee & Steve Miller’s Fledgling was published, I was ridiculously happy.

July 27, 2009

Originally I had intended to post book titles as I read them. I am a voracious reader and thought it would be interesting. But instead of posting them here I’ll post them on Twitter with the #lastbookread hashtag. Join the fun.

(I have been keeping a list since the new year of what I have read this year, and will post at the end of the year with commentary. Thanks Evernote. It will be interesting to me if no one else.)

This was inspired by Sharon Lee, of Lee & Miller, and the excellent Liaden science fiction series. On her blog, she often lists the books she has read so far in a year. I commend the authors and the series to anyone.

Last Book Read – Brothers in Arms

July 22, 2009

Last book read was Bujold’s “Brothers in Arms”. A quick read off the back of my nightstand, when I needed something quick for bedtime. Second favorite Miles book.
